ÜBER DAS STÜCK

In der Freakshow auf dem Trafalgar Fair gibt es eine merkwürdige neue Attraktion: Wer ist Grinpayne und wie kam er zu seinem abscheulichen Lächeln?
 
Mit Hilfe eines alten Puppenspielers, seines Hauswolfs und eines blinden Mädchens wird Grinpaynes Geschichte erzählt. Als sich die Nachricht in der Hauptstadt verbreitet, ändert sich alles. In seiner Verzweiflung, die schrecklichen Geheimnisse seiner rätselhaften Vergangenheit zu erfahren, lässt Grinpayne seine wahre Liebe zurück und begibt sich auf eine Reise in eine noch grausamere Welt - die der Aristokratie.

​HINTERGRUND

THE GRINNING MAN ist eine märchenhafte Liebesgeschichte, durchzogen von rabenschwarzem Humor, einem Hauch von Gothic Horror und verwegenen Abenteuern. Das Stück wurde 2016 mit großem Erfolg im Bristol Old Vic uraufgeführt und wechselte 2017 in die Trafalgar Studios im Londoner West End, wo es Kultstatus erlangte und begeisterte Kritiken erhielt.

A Possible Guide to Doubling/Puppeteering from the Authors:
In our production, the performers playing GRINPAYNE and DEA puppeteered their smaller puppet selves. Two puppeteers did MOJO, who, as performers, also doubled as THE WOMAN IN THE SNOW/CHORUS and KUPSAK/CHORUS. The performer playing MOTHER/ELIZA TRELAW also doubled as QUAKE and the performer playing HAZLITT TRELAW/HANGED MAN doubled as OSRIC. The performer playing URSUS also doubled as KING CLARENCE in an earlier iteration of the show, which worked well. If you’ve got a larger company, you will be able to allocate the roles more widely, but bear in mind, performers will have less to do.

In the West End production of The Grinning Man, the Violin 1, Violin 2, Cello and Accordion parts were played by offstage actor-musicians. The Violin 1 and Cello parts are likely substantial enough to include individually as part of your orchestra, however it may be sensible to combine the Accordion and Violin 2 parts which do not play simultaneously, so that a single player covers both of those parts. Alternatively, you can cast actor-musicians as per the original casting.​
